Tata Tiago And Hyundai Venue Crash Head-on: The Aftermath
Over the past few years, Indian consumers have started demanding safer cars. This is partly due to Global NCAP’s new car assessment program which displayed how Indian cars performed in crash tests and made everyone aware of the safety standards practiced by carmakers. However, these tests are always conducted in a controlled environment and there may be some scenarios wherein a crash test may differ from a real-world accident completely due to different factors and conditions. With that being said, let’s take a look at an accident between a Tata Tiago and Hyundai Venue.
The result
The accident seems to be taken place somewhere in South India. As one can see from the pictures, both the cars have their front end damaged quite substantially which leads us to believe that both the cars crashed head-on. The driver of the Hyundai Venue sustained minor injuries whereas the Tata Tiago driver died on the spot. Going by the pictures, one can make out that the front co-driver airbag of both cars deployed successfully. The Hyundai Venue driver survived the crash due to the driver’s airbag deploying, however, the same cannot be said about the Tata Tiago driver.
The driver’s airbag of the Tiago did not deploy which may have led to the driver’s death. Though we are not sure of this, the Tiago’s airbag might have not been deployed due to the driver not wearing the seatbelt. Other than this factor, one can also see the way these cars handled the crash. The frontal crash beam of the Venue absorbed the impact well and didn’t let the crash affect the cabin. The Tiago’s front end seems to have been damaged severely and the damage done is much more than what the Venue sustained. But, the structure of the Tiago has been crumpled which must have compromised the safety of the cabin. The A-pillar has been bent completely which led to the impact being transferred inside the cabin. Couple this with the airbag not deploying and you have a fatal crash leading to death.
The Tata Tiago has scored 4 stars in the Global NCAP crash test for adult occupant protection. It comes with dual airbags, ABS, EBD, and ISOFIX child mounts as standard. However, the crash test reported that the structure was unstable and that it could not withstand additional force. The Indian spec Hyundai Venue hasn’t been tested by the Global NCAP as of yet. However, Global NCAP recently tested the Creta and i20 wherein both scored 3 stars. The report also suggested that both cars had an unstable body shell. Taking this into consideration, one can assume that the Venue’s crash test performance wouldn’t be far off from its siblings and that it could be a 3-star crash safety-rated car.
