10 Things To Know About the Hyundai IONIQ 5
The reveal and launch of the IONIQ 5 are just around the corner. We do know for a fact that the all-electric EV will be launched at the 2023 Auto Expo.
Now, before we get a good look at the new car here are 10 things need to know and expect from the IONIQ 5!
1. Design
Okay, agreed that looks can be subjective but, the IONIQ 5 has a very unique design. It is futuristic yet has some retro vibes with those squared headlamps. Unlike most cars which are curvy, the IONIQ 5 is more squarish and boxy. The front headlights are flanked by L-shaped DRLs. It also gets a massive LED strip that runs across the front. The lights too are squared, like the shape of pixels. The front design is very minimalistic, with a sharp look and bold character lines on the bonnet.
The sides are flanked by a set of massive 20” wheels which fill in the wheel arches really well. The wheel caps have a design that seems to be made using a spirograph as a reference. The rear is the same story as the front. It somehow looks a tad bit taller and boxier from the rear. The taillights are solid rectangles with pixel-inspired LEDs.
2. Interior
Inside the cabin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover gets adjustable front-row seats with a reclining function. The automaker claims that the cabin is made of sustainable materials such as bio paint, eco-processed leather as well as natural and recycled fibers. There is a center console that can be slid back and forth which liberates tons of space in the center. The dashboard is dominated by a pair of 12-inch screens – one for the driver’s display and the other for the infotainment – with both housed in a large piece of glass. In terms of features, it gets an advanced heads-up display featuring augmented reality functions, advanced driver assistance features, electrically adjustable front seats, ambient lighting, connected car tech, and ventilated seats.
3. Drivetrain
The Ioniq 5 will be offered with two battery options – 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh, with a choice of either a single motor setup or a dual motor setup. The single motor setup will offer 167HP of power and 350Nm of torque. The top-spec model of the Ioniq 5 will be offered with a dual-motor setup and 72.6 kWh. This setup offers a power output of 298BHP and 605Nm of torque. This model is capable of going from 0 to 100 in just 5.2 seconds. It is based on the E-GMP platform which allows for both 400-volt and 800-volt charging.
4. Platform
The IONIQ 5 is based on Hyundai’s born-electric E-GMP platform. Hyundai’s E-GMP platform is based on four pillars – Modularity, Performance, Reliability, and Usability. The platform is flexible and supports multiple body types be it Sedans, Hatch, or SUVs. The chassis, battery, motor, and power electric system make up the E-GMP platform. The battery pack will be able to power electronic appliances as well with its bi-directional charging plug. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) charges both the high-voltage as well as the auxiliary battery.
5. 5-Star Safety Rating
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 scored full 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. The results are impressive with an 88% Adult Occupant score, 86% Child Occupant score, and 88% Safety Assist score. It gets 7 airbags including a unique center-side airbag for added protection. Apart from the electronic aids and 360-degree parking camera, it comes with a host of driver assistance features. Using the front view camera, radar sensors, and navigation data, HDA 2 controls the speed, direction, and following distance. Additionally, it can assist drivers when changing lanes.
6. Accolades
The Ioniq 5 has won not 1, not 2, but 7 awards! Some of these include the very prestigious World Car Of The Year 2022 and the World Electric Vehicle Of The Year 2022. The Ioniq 5 went up against a bunch of I.C.E cars and EVs around the world to win these awards. Additionally, the jury consisted of journalists from around the world which shows how broadly appealing the Ioniq 5 is. Its design has been praised by critics and many countries like the UK and Germany have named it to be their car of the year too.
7. Sustainability
